School Closure Update

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has created a public health crisis that forces everyone to take unprecedented steps to prevent the spread of the illness among our families and the Doral Academy community.

Dear Doral Academy of Nevada Families,

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has created a public health crisis that forces everyone to take unprecedented steps to prevent the spread of the illness among our families and the Doral Academy community. Today, the Governor of Nevada has announced statewide school closure. At this time, we have been fortunate enough to have no confirmed or presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 within our student body, staff or community. However, in accordance with the Governor's directives and in an effort to prevent the further spread of the virus we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close school beginning Monday, March 16, 2020 and remain closed until at least April 6. During this time all events, extracurricular activities, and before and after school care will be suspended. We will be working with the Governor’s office, the State Public Charter School Authority, and the Nevada DOE to determine if and when our schools will return to normal operation.

We understand the significant impact school closure will have on families and we are committed to addressing the needs of all our students. We are working with the Nevada State Public Charter School Authority and the State Department of Education to assure that your children’s education is not interrupted by this closure. In this effort, we have been working tirelessly to finalize an immediate plan to provide our students with online educational resources which they may access. It is our intent to plan for possible transition to online learning and/or live virtual classes. We will keep you informed of future developments in providing online learning and/or live virtual classes. At this time, we have not been informed by the State whether this instruction will count towards the instructional minutes required by law. We will provide an update as we obtain more information from the State.

To assist with continuity of instruction, online resources will be made available to you beginning this coming week. Doral Academy will coordinate with families to ensure all students have access to the technology or devices necessary to participate.

We are currently working with community partners on a plan to provide our students receiving free and reduced-price meals with access to food service during the closure. The USDA has granted the Nevada Department of Agriculture a waiver to operate the Summer food service program during school closures. We will be communicating further information regarding the sites where those food distributions will take place.
The health and safety of our students and community are our top priorities. We appreciate your patience and support as we navigate this rapidly changing public health crisis. We are committed to keeping you informed throughout this process.
Thank you again for your continued cooperation and concern as we work together as a community for the safety and well-being of our students, staff and families.

Sincerely,
Bridget Phillips
Chief Academic and Operations Officer
